LSCMS IG in Singapore Regional Symposium 2011 (Project Management Institute, Singapore Chapter)

The Singapore Regional Symposium 2011 hosted by Project Management Institute, Singapore Chapter (SPMI) was held from 14^th to 15^th November 2011 at Resorts World Sentosa. Six students from Republic Polytechnic (School of Engineering) LSCMS Interest Group were invited by SPMI to be the student-helpers. The students are namely Lee Si Rong (2^nd Year, DIOM student), Reuben Lim (2^nd Year, DSCM student), Frianto Utomo (2^nd Year, DSCM student), Nur Safirah Bte Abdul Malek (2^nd Year, DIOM student), Siti Nasiha Bte Saiman (2^nd Year, DIOM student) and Seri Amirah Bte Mohammad Amin (2^nd Year, DIOM student).

Overall, this has been an eye-opening and memorable experience for all the participating students. Once again, we would like to thank Mr. Alex Siow (President, SPMI), Mr. Umesh Ursekar (Vice-President, SPMI), Mr. Tan Seng Chong (Vice-President, SPMI), Mr. Oliver Siasat (Organizing Lead for Symposium, SPMI), Mr. Cyril Quah (Co-Organizing Lead for Symposium, SPMI) as well as other SPMI board members, for the opportunity given to be directly involved in this event.

“It is an honour to be invited as part of the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Society IG, to represent the school as a volunteer at the symposium held at Resort World Singapore. The event was under the Project Management Institute, Singapore Chapter; which expected more than 800 members at the registration counter just on the first day itself.

When I first arrived at Resort World Singapore, I did not know what to expect at the symposium. Fortunately, we were all briefed and given tasks to do throughout the event. I was initially tasked to help out during the registration which was a daunting thought after hearing that many managers such as Project Managers would mostly show up within a time frame of half an hour.

However, even though the registration was on the verge of being overwhelmed by the whole kit and caboodle of people, together with the other volunteers, we managed to pull through.

The symposium was split into two runs, which would take place simultaneously after the opening speech during each of the two days. When each run was having their own seminar, where a multitude of speakers would have their own time slots; there would be many activities taking place behind the scenes. The breaks in-between the sessions were where people could enjoy food and drinks whilst networking and catching up with each other. The different runs and scale of the event meant that we had to make sure to shepherd with clear directions at the right time, which was quite a challenge.

I was able to get the opportunity to listen to a few of the many speakers at the symposium. Many of the topics discussed were relevant to what I was learning in school, or would learn in the future. Topics such as management in general and projects, six sigma and the common Information Technology topic of Cloud Technology. I learnt a lot from the speakers, especially about Cloud Technology; being a popular topic throughout. I got to meet many people from different companies and interact with them during breaks, where interesting experiences were being exchanged among the members.

The whole experience and opportunity was tiring albeit educational, interesting and fun! I am thus thankful for the privilege to partake in such an event and look forward to future opportunities for the invaluable learning experience. Thank you SPMI!”

“This is my first experience to attend a conference. I feel very privileged to be able to join and listen as one of the student helpers.

On the first day of the conference, I see many participants covering professional and senior management from IT industry, Oil and gas, Pharmaceutical, Manufacturing, Construction, Service Management and Public Sectors.

I am really impressed by the presentation made by IBM speaker Ms. Suhwee Lee. She was saying about the importance of research and collaboration in program management. She brings up this point which consider like a new strategy in program management. These are many valuable and unforgettable experiences for me.

“It is a great honour and privilege to be invited as a student volunteer for Singapore Regional Symposium 2011, organized by Project Management Institute, Singapore Chapter (SPMI).

The symposium was initiated by Mr. Alex Siow, SPMI President, giving the welcome speech. The opening speech was by Mr. Zainudin Nordin, Guest of Honour, Member of Parliament for Bishan – Toa Payoh GRC and Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee of the Ministry of Manpower.

The Symposium was split into 2 different tracks which held simultaneously for 2 days, with different speakers at different time slots. In between the tracks, there were networking sessions for the participating delegates, where they network and catch up with one another.

While doing back-end work I was able to listen to some of the speakers presentations. There were 2 speakers that caught my attentions most. The first speaker was Mr. Charles Lim. Mr Charles Lim used the example of the Burj to fully explain the concept of PRINCE2 and provide an understanding in the key stress areas of project management, and how to manage it. The second speaker was Mr. Nishant Kasibhatla. He was the last speaker on the first day in one of the tracks; his speech was fast - paced and mind – blowing. He was sharing the different techniques to achieve peak performance by improving our memory.

SPMI Regional Symposium 2011 was an eye opening experience for me, in meeting different people and hearing from different speakers. I am grateful for being able to be part of the event. It was a great experience. I look forward to future opportunities to gain more such unforgettable learning experience. Thank you!”

SEG DSCM Student in Supply Chain World South East Asia 2011 Conference

The Supply Chain World South East Asia 2011 Conference was held from 8^th -9th November 2011 at the Concorde Hotel, Singapore. 4 participants from Republic Polytechnic were invited by Supply Chain Council-Southeast Asia (SCC-SEA) to attend the conference. They were namely Mr. Soh Lai Seng (Programme Chair for Diploma in Supply Chain Management), Mr. Derek Ang (Technology Development Centre Manager), Mr. Seow Aik Hoe (Academic Manager – i-Sail) and student Sylvia Utami (3rd Year Student in Diploma in Supply Chain Management).

“This is my first experience to attend a conference. I feel very privileged to be invited as one of the student delegates. On the first day of the conference, I see many professionals coming from different industries and companies. Amongst them are representatives from top MNCs such as IBM, Hewlett Packard, Tata Consultancy, iCognitive etc. The first day of the conference starts with a welcome address by Mr. Koh Juay Meng-President, Supply Chain Council-South East Asia. This is followed by an opening address by the Guest-of-Honor, Dr. Robert Yap (CEO, YCH Group).

I have the deepest impression on the first presentation made by the speaker from IBM. It is about the SCOR model. SCOR stands for Supply Chain Operations Reference and the model involve 5 primary phases; Plan, Source, Make, Deliver and Return. The SCOR model is normally used as a framework among business processes to support communication and improve effectiveness along supply chain. In addition, there are several topics that I have learnt before in school, such as best practices, benchmarking and sustainability. Through the presentations, it allows me to understand from the perspectives of industrial practitioners. These are all valuable and unforgettable experiences for me.

The agenda of the conference are spaced with several networking breaks. I finally understand why they are called “networking breaks”, mainly because during those sessions, we are given the chance to mingle around to expand our networking circle. During those networking sessions, most of the professional will exchange their business cards and have short discussion to get to know one another. I am glad that I have the privileged to talk to delegates from various companies, including Mr. Koh Juay Meng (President, SCC-SEA), Dr. Robert Yap (CEO, YCH Group), Mr William Goh (Director-SCC-SEA) and many others.

Today looking back at those 2 days and the experiences that I have gained, I am so grateful and feel so fortunate to be given the chance to attend the conference. It has been an eye-opening experience for me and I really appreciate the opportunity given. Thank you!”

SEG EHIG Students Achieved Merit Award for Participation in A*STAR 3D Face App Competition 2011

Team "EHIG", comprising of 5 students from Electronics Hobby Interest Group was awarded the Merit Award in the inaugural 3D Face App competition on 1 Nov 2011.

The competition, organised by Exploit Technologies was open to members of the general public as part of A* STAR. This aims to raise awareness of the 3D Face Modelling Technology and encourage participants to try using it. Participants are required to develop ideas, concepts, storyboards and applications that leverage on this technology.

Their winning project, 3D Face E learning Cards is an educational app that allows parents to develop learning cards for their kids to learn about the names of different occupations. The app allows the overlay of their own 3D faces or other preferred 3D faces on appropriate backgrounds to create a fun and engaging learning experience for kids.

“Their winning 3D App”

SEG student William Chan wins Medalist for International WorldSkills London 2011

Congratulations to William Chan Jun Wei, DDEE student for winning the International Worldskills London 2011, Bronze Medal (Information Network Cabling) on 10^th Oct 2011.

William represented Singapore and competed for 4 intensive days from 5th Oct 2011 to 8th Oct 2011 in the Information Network Cabling Trade with 10 other countries (including Japan, Korea, Sweden, Norway, Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil, Hongkong, Macau China, UAE). It was a tedious fight between the countries, with our RP and SEG fighting spirit, he has emerged and won an International Bronze Medal for Singapore after Japan and Korea in this prestigious International Worldskills competition.

Worldskills is an international skills competition with over 50 countries participation. There are 43 trade categories in total and Singapore is represented in 19 categories. http://www.worldskillslondon2011.com/

Green Aviation Fuel Team (DAE Students) in finale of Singapore's Create Tomorrow Challenge 2011

SEG’s Green Aviation Fuel Team participated in the finale of “Singapore’s Create Tomorrow Challenge 2011 – Green Technology for Aviation” on Friday 30^th September 2011.

This competition has been organized by Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), sponsored by Airbus and operated by Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

The students have done a good job in their project; Green Aviation Fuel for five months. They have been selected as the finalist in the senior category (Post Sec. Schools) of the competition. Each team member won the finalist certificate, gift and money vouchers as well as the prize of SGD500 for the team.

The exhibition had over 2000 visitors and got the attention of media.

SEG Students Clinched 2nd Prize (Silver) & Most Popular Booth Award in the "Home Team InnoFest 2011"

A group of 4 SEG students had done us proud today in the “Home Team InnoFest 2011”, which is a competition cum exhibition hosted by Singapore Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to seek ideas and innovations to meet Singapore’s safety and security challenges. These students are from the Diploma in Biomedical Electronics (DBME) under one Industry Project “Wireless Dementia Patients Tracking System”. They clinched the 2nd prize (Silver Award, $600) under the ITE/Polys category & the most popular booth award ($500). Their total prize money is $1100.

Cyriva Club members in Polytechnic Forum 2011

The final week of Poly Forum 2011, the week all of us is looking forward for where all of us gathered at Malaysia Desaru, Lotus Resort. Once everyone gathered, we had briefing session by the camp chief and after that each different sub theme head to our own respective places for our breakout sessions.

Before we had our first breakout session, we had our buffet lunch. The food was superb delicious, it was so nice that we had to go for another round of serving. Not forgetting the dessert it’s nice.

For the first breakout session, our task was to compile all our findings from each sub subthemes, Local Charity, Price of Charity and Global Charity. From there, with the three compiled information, we combined all into one as a whole Charity Subtheme.

It was challenging for us to narrow down our research, taking out good points so that we can produce one good presentation for the whole subtheme Charity.

After all the intensive discussion, it’s time for our fun time.

2^nd Day, we had our breakout session with discussion and finalized on our presentation for the third day where we had to present it to the rest 4 subthemes.

3^rd Day, everyone gathered at the Ballroom and we had our presentation from all 5 different subthemes. After all the presentations, we all went back to our rooms and get changed for our social night. Each subtheme did their own performances and as for Charity subtheme all of us gave our best shot. All of us had fun!

On the last day, Hasif and a group of selected students were appointed to return back to Republic Polytechnic early morning to prepare for the Dialogue Session with the Minister of Education.

Hasif and Khong Zi Jian from NP were appointed by Charity Subtheme to decorate the panel for the exhibition booths. And thanks to David Liew, facilitator for Charity Subtheme and a facilitator from RP (STA) for assisting and helping us design the poster. And here is the decorated booth.

Cyriva Club members in Polytechnic Pre-Forum 2011

The Polytechnic Forum series was started in 1996. It is held annually, and provides a platform for polytechnic students to gain a deeper understanding of national issues through discussions and group work.

This year, Polytechnic Forum 2011 is organized by Republic Polytechnic. Two Students from School of Engineering participated in this year’s forum and the theme is ‘Our Singapore Dream’. Focusing on 5 different sub themes, the 5Cs are Career, Comfort, Children, Charity and lastly Culture.

Muhammad Hasif (DMNT) and Josen Tey (DAE), from Cyriva Club were appointed in Charity and Consideration Sub-theme. Hasif was assigned in Global Charity Sub-Sub-Theme and Josen in Local Charity Sub-Sub-Theme.

It’s the first day of Pre-Forum, and all of us assembled according to our own sub-theme. There are five Polytechnics involved in this Poly Forum, and a total number of 300 students. Today its team bonding day and we had ice breaking game with introduction of ourselves, and not to forget we had amazing race in the city. This is where we all get bonded and start working as a team.

2^nd Day, We had a dialog session with two keynote address, Ms Beatrice Chia-Richmond (Creative Director, NDP 2011) and Mr Boo Junfeng (Independent Filmmaker).

After lunch, our Charity Subtheme had to craft a survey on Charity in Singapore. Our purpose of having this survey was to help us in doing our research about Charity in Singapore.

3^rd Day, we had to conduct our surveys and we were allocated in three different places, namely Woodlands, Yishun and Ang Mo Kio. We both partnered together and we walked around asking 5 minutes of passerby’s time to do our survey. It was challenging to get people to do our survey but nevertheless we managed to complete the 20 survey paper that was given to us.

After lunch, we then moved on to Clarke Quay for our field trip. We visited the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) to know and learn more about the non-profitable organization. This helps to boost our research on the Volunteerism rate in Singapore and a lot more other info that we are able to gain from them.

4^th Day, we had Dialog Session with Voluntary Welfare Organization (VWO) and they are from ‘Blessing in a Bag’ and ‘Mercy Relief’. They shared their personal experiences on helping the needy, not only locally but in overseas too.

After lunch, we had a field trip to Tzu Chi Foundation Singapore. Personally both of us are not aware of this Foundation. After this field trip, we gained more insights on this foundation. It was a great trip, we enjoyed the nice tea and dessert prepared by them.

5^th Day, it’s the last day of Pre-Forum and all of us were excited and looking forward for next week Forum at Desaru, Lotus Resort. We had dialogue session with Mr Aaron Maniam (Civil Servant, Poet, Youth Volunteer, and Futurist) and Miss Chang Li-Lin (Associate director of the Institute of Policy Studies at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy)

Amazing Night Cycling Race 2011

Cyriva Club has just concluded our Amazing Night Cycling Race 2011 on 15^th September till 16^th September 2011. This annual night cycling event requires participants to form their own teams of 5 and travel around Singapore Island using bicycles. Their teamwork, leadership skills and endurance levels were tested as they were required to clear several challenges at the various pit stops before they can proceed on.

The event started off when the participants arrived around 6.30pm at East Coast Park. When each Team arrived, they had to complete a Puzzle Game. In order to obtain their first clue to the Puzzle Game, they had to search for 2 of our Cyriva Club members who were roaming around intentionally, to collect a crossword puzzle. They would then complete the puzzle and proceed to the bike rental stall to collect their bikes.

Throughout the night, participants were needed to navigate their way to the next pit stop. The Second Pit Stop was along East Coast Park. The game is called 2 People 3 legs, where students needed to tie their legs together and make their way together. After each team completed the task successfully, they were given a Clue Card that would lead them to the next Pit Stop.

After the Pit Stop at East Coast Park, they made their way to Bedok Reservoir, where they had to compete with other teams. They would need to burst the other team’s balloons in order to win.

The next game was carried out at Sun Plaza Park, Tampines. After every team completed the word hunt game, they had another mission to complete, Picture hunt. They had to take picture along their way to Pasir Ris. Upon arrival at the Fifth Pit Stop, Pasir Ris, they would have to present the pictures before they could attempt the next activity.

Upon finishing the game, they set off to Changi to have their break. All the participants looked forward to have their supper at, the all famous, Changi Nasi Lemak. After the sumptuous and satisfying break, they headed to Changi Beach for another game, Bike Tricks. They really had fun, while performing tricks using their bicycle. Following next was Balloon Charades. Team member had to perform for the other members to guess the activity. Communication and rapport were very important here and all teams did quite well.

After completing the final pit stop, they raced all their way back to the finishing line. In all, the activities carried out helped to foster better bonds and communication within teams.

Educational Visit to National Library Board Supply Centre

Educational Visit to National Library Board Supply Centre was conducted successfully on 20^th Sept 2011 (Tuesday). This visit was a joint initiative between Interest Group-LSCMS IG and RP-NEC RFID Competency Lab.

It was opened to all SEG and IG students. There were a total of 16 students and 2 staff who visited National Library Board (NLB) Supply Center (SC) at Changi South on that afternoon.

At NLB Supply Centre, Mr. Ben Tang, the Operations Manager, explained to us about the role of NLB Supply Centre and how it handles its ordering/distribution process, how NLB

SC has transformed from the conveyor-based operation to cellular-line processing as well as their 2nd Generation RFID Reader/Tag implementation.

Overall the feedbacks from the students have been very positive from the visits.

“It wasn't an easy task how they get the job done. They went through few stages to improve in the work done. We also see what do they do in the centre like Supply and Distributing, Selection of books, reviewing the different kind of book and maintain its standard for fellow customer, how they preserve books and why and many more. They even go through with us the process and the difficulties that were faced when sing the conveyor operation and how it is improved when the Cellular Processing Line was implemented. I learn quite a few processes and how tedious the work can be. Overall, I had a good experience there going into place that can't be easily access by the public. “Generally, CPL system enables the National Library Supply Centre to perform better, and eventually serve and benefited the public visitor of the National Library more. The National Library Supply Centre has come a long way since it first started in 1997 March 17, changing from the old system (conveyor based operation) to the better performance system (Cellular Processing Line) with an efficient work flow which ultimately benefited the public. Anyway, such outing is very meaningful, because not only can we learn things related to our courses and how a supply chain company or factory runs, but also the way how things work in the modern society. It is all about efficiency and low costing which eventually also produces a quality product or result. This will help us all in the near future when we are out there in the work force very much on our own.” ~Student: Liu Yu

DCA Student’s Experience in Space Academy Singapore

Students from School Of The Arts, Victoria Junior College, Hwa Chong Junior College, NUS High School and Republic Polytechnic came together for a 5-day Space Academy Singapore (SAS) course. We were called 4SAS as we were the 4^th batch of cadets since the programme launched last year.

The SAS is a joint collaboration by TriVector International together with Singapore Space and Technology Association. This programme was conducted by ex-NASA engineers and it includes classroom lectures, hands-on practical sessions and field trips.

Things that we covered in the lectures did encompass certain topics in these two modules I took, Aerodynamics and Project Management. Aerodynamics was the basics for Unmanned Aerial Platforms and Project Management aided in understanding Systems Engineering and Risk Management. The other topics which were covered were Astrodynamics, Astronautics, Satellites and Communications, Extreme Weather Survival and Rocket Propulsion.

After learning all these theoretical aspects of Space, we got to do some hands-on activities to apply what we’ve learnt. On Unmanned Aerial Platforms, we got to navigate Mars Rovers and Quadracopters. We did not get to see these vehicles while we were navigating them to simulate the conditions the controllers are under. On Systems Engineering, Satellites and Communications, and some other space theory, we were given the chance to debate. On Rocket Propulsion, we constructed our own bottle rockets and launched them to learn about the fuel load’s effect.

For field trips, we started off by playing paintball. It was definitely a great team-bonding session. In Astronautics, one thing we learned about was Astronaut Training. This included micro gravity simulation which can be achieved through scuba diving. 4SAS got to go to the Naval Diving Unit where we scuba dived and did certain tasks under water, which is similar to carrying out these task in space, microgravity. We were also brought to Singtel’s Earth Station to see the application of Satellites and Communications in Singapore. When we were taught Extreme Weather Survival, we were taken to Snow City where we carried out activities in the freezing chamber in nothing but our flight suits and shoes.

It was a once in a life time experience at 4SAS which exposed me to many things I never knew or thought about. Seeing the application of the knowledge gained from 4SAS definitely felt good and rewarding. It has truly sparked an interest in me and given me another area of study to consider going into. Apart from the classes, activities and field trips, many friendships were built with both the instructors and the other cadets. After 4SAS, all the cadets and instructors met up frequently to have fun and show the instructors around Singapore. I’m also part of the youth club now.

Cyriva Club Student Feedback Session

On 26^th July 2011, Student Feedback Session on Cyriva Club was organised for School of Engineering students to introduce and gather feedback on Cyriva Club and the 5 IGs under SEG.

This feedback session started off with both President (Shariff) and Vice-President (Syazana) of Cyriva Club to introduce Cyriva Club 9.0 (AY2011/2012) management committee members. We shared about the past events organized by us and the upcoming events.

The President (Satishvaran) and Vice-President (Md Afiq) from Aeromodelling IG were also there and they gave a wonderful speech by introducing themselves, their IG activities and upcoming activities. They are currently recruiting members so interested students can still apply.

We also introduced and described the nature of the other 4 IGs, namely (Aeromodelling IG, Electronics Hobby IG, Institution of Engineers, Logistics & Supply Chain Management Student Chapter and Medical Electronics IG)

It’s time for us to hear their feedback on what events they want Cyriva to offer.

To wrap up the feedback session, our Gold Award Recipient (Hasif) for NYAA (National Youth Achievement Award) shared about NYAA, 5 different sections of this programme, the requirement to complete the different levels and the benefits of NYAA. It was an interesting presentation and participants seemed interested as they started asking questions on NYAA. We hope to increase the participation rate of SEG students in the NYAA journey.

CE talk on Introduction to 3D Face Modelling

EHIG has successfully organised a CE Talk on Introduction to 3D Face Modelling and the 3D Face App Competition 2011, conducted by Mr Peter Tay, Assistant Vice President, Science and Engineering Commercialisation, Exploit Technologies on 27^th July 2011.

A total of around 200 students attended the talk. The aim was to introduce students to the 3D Face Modelling technology from the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and its applications. Information on the 3D Face App Competition 2011 was also presented during the talk.

The students put in a lot of hard work for the competition starting as early as March 2011 to prepare for this competition. They have to go through the steep learning curve of Geographical Information System (GIS) and using ArcGIS as part of their competition.

Team Shine has impressed the judges with their innovative ideas and received an Eureka Award. The team that comes up with an original project concept, uses creative approach to problem solving and analyses issues from a “why didn’t I think of that” perspective!

Team OptFor has impressed the public with their project and many people came over to learn more about it. One staff from NCS even approached the students to get their contact numbers.

Team Republicans has received the 1^st runners up for the GIS Analysis Category and they have impressed the judges with their presentations to receive the “Best Presentation” Award. In addition, the team has worked hard to garner supports from classes to classes to earned the “Most Likes” Awards and they would like to thank Everyone who have voted and supported them! Really Appreciate All the Help!

Participation in Prototype Presentation at TRACOM SBTW WIT Exhibition 2011

On 13 July 2011, SEG DIOM has participated in a Prototype Presentation at the Singapore Police Force TRACOM SBTW WIT exhibition held at Republic Polytechnic. Four students from DIOM, Azfar, Masagoes, Fareez and Azlan, did a great job in showcasing our FYP collaboration with TRACOM (portable modular writing surface) to the students and officers. A total of two models (made by the DIOM students) and two prototypes (fabricated with vendor) were presented during the exhibition. A CE activity was conducted to solicit feedback and response was good.

Comments from the organizers are as follows:

“The TRACOM SBTW WIT exhibition held at Blk W1 was a resounding success. A big THANK YOU to you and the project team students for their dedication and hard work in running the exhibition!

We appreciate your hard work & efforts!

We have given out & received a total of ~600 feedbacks from the RP students, staffs & our very own VSC officers. Response was so overwhelming that we had to turn away many others who came forward asking to participate in our feedback.

In all, we have received many positive feedbacks on the potential of our prototypes. Some of the pertinent area for improvements highlighted are:

1) The stability of the leg structure

2) Adding colours to the prototypes

3) Explore materials like carbon fibre, alloy, titanium, environmental friendly materials, etc

4) Should include seats to showcase as a complete prototype, and many more. ”

Participation in Poster Presentation at Inaugural GSK-EDB Green & Sustainable Manufacturing Symposium 2011

On 6-7 July 2011, SEG DIOM has participated in a Poster Presentation at the inaugural GSK-EDB Green & Sustainable Manufacturing Symposium 2011 at Fusionopolis. Two students from DIOM, Leila and Shangeetha, were selected for the Poster Presentation and they did a great job at showcasing our project to the visitors at the Symposium.

A worthy mention is that out of the 35 posters selected by GSK for the Poster Presentation, only 2 are from Polytechnics (1 from NP and 1 from RP), while all the others are from NTU, NUS and A*Star. Hence, we are really glad to be given the opportunity to showcase one of our students’ projects in this Symposium.

SEG DBME students successively received TKK Merit Award for the 2nd time!

After RP’s first winning of Tan Kah Kee (TKK) Young Inventors' Award in 2010, more RP teams (at least 8 teams) participated in the TKK competition in 2011. Finally, one team from Diploma of Biomedical Electronics (DBME), School of Engineering, won the 2nd TKK award for RP successively in 2011!

This time, our students won the Merit award in the senior students section. Since there isn’t any GOLD award given for all categories this year, RP team actually won the 2nd prize after the silver award.

Many VIPs, including Prof. Su Guaning (Former President of NTU, Chairman of Governing Board of TKK Foundation) tried out RP’s iPhone based BCI wheelchair system in the award ceremony held on 28 May. The event was featured in Local TV news.

SEG DBME students received IES Gold award for the 1st time on 28 May 2011!

A group of DBME students received the 1^st IES design GOLD award on 28 May 2011.

As the GOLD winner, RP students were invited to attend the IES AGM cum IES award ceremony on 28 May. RP students are also invited to deliver a presentation to nearly 500 engineers in Singapore. This greatly helps promote RP’s branding in local industry.

SEG DCA students won CAAS video competition

Our SEG Diploma In Civil Aviation (DCA) students team comprising 5 members namely, Mani Raj Nadavan, Hee Bao Jiean, Cheong Jia Hao, Siti Ilmuna and Mardiah has won the first ever video competition organized by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. The competition was open to all IHLs and RP emerged with the top prize. This is the placing of the different polys in the competition:

2nd Prize ($2,000): Team 1M1 from Ngee Ann Polytechnic

MEIG: Industry talk on Electrosurgical Equipment

MEIG had recently organised a CE talk for our students on Electrosurgical Units. Mr. Andre Yeo, Senior Engineer from Covidien had come down to give us this talk. He had also bought the electrosurgical unit, ForceTiad, for the talk to give a demo to our students. The first photo shows the demonstration of the effect of poor electrode placement with an orange!!

There were also other demonstrations using light bulb. These demonstrations did capture all the student’s attention and they got quite involved and participative during the talk. Below are some photos and students responses to share with you all.

Firstly i really surprised about the faci not getting electric shock while working with the machine. but when he explained about the current technique used in machines i feel that there is nothing to worry about the short circuit or getting shock etc. the machine is so user friendly…………

…….To see for ourselves the equipments used in the modern day surgical operation is fantastic. Although the demonstration wasn’t done for ‘real’, but the use of light bulb and orange was good enough. We could already see its capability. What makes it more interesting is that the electrosurgical unit is able to stop bleeding when a patient is undergoing an open surgery…..

Amazing Man 2011 - SEG Bonding Session

Amazing Man was held on 6 June 2011 at Sentosa. This is a bonding session specially organised to create and foster stronger bonds within Cyriva Club seniors and juniors, as well as IG members.

The event started off with an amazing race at 10:30am where the participants gathered at Harbourfront Centre. They were split into teams before receiving their first task “Make your way to Sentosa”. The participants came for this event with a burning passion despite the fact that the clue cards were hidden well enough and written in different languages.

The teams had an enjoyable time finding the first clue card at Skypark held by the game masters. After finding the first clue card, the teams took the monorail and alighted at beach station to challenge their second task.

Once completing all these tasks, the teams were given the next clue card as to where their next task was. This continued on until the 5^th clue. They sure were having a hard time finding the hidden clue cards as our game masters hid it in secretive places.

As soon as the amazing race was over, the teams headed to the homebase to have their lunch. Everyone took their packed lunch and sat in a circle for easy interaction. Lunch was great, not only the food, but the chatting, jokes and laughter made each and everyone closer.

Beach games came next. Alipom and handball were games that require teamwork and communication among the teams. Participants had a great time playing and time passed fast. It was late in the afternoon in a blink of an eye. The weather was hot and all of us were itching for a dip in the water. In no time, all of us were in the sea playing games and enjoying our "sea-soaking" time together.

As evening approached, we were reluctant but all of us got out of the water and took a last group photo before washing up. Despite meeting new friends, the participants were bonded with one another and brought home smiles on their faces.

An astounding success - Underwater Robotic Olympiad 2011

On 25^th May (Wednesday), SEG organized the 3^rd Underwater Robotic Olympiad 2011 for 300 secondary school students.

The highlights of the event were:

- TV Media coverage, newspaper coverage and interviews of RP staff and secondary school students in English, Malay and Tamil

- Full turn up of more than 300 students from 40 secondary schools

- Successful completion of special task by the secondary school students

Students take part in Underwater Robotics Olympiad

SINGAPORE: Sixty teams from 40 schools gathered at the Republic Polytechnic on Wednesday to learn how to build robots from scratch and race them - in this year's Underwater Robotics Olympiad.

About 60 teams of students had a chance to see their self-made robots race one another at the school's 25-metre pool.

Loyang Secondary School's robot emerged first in the underwater race, with a time of 38.14 seconds, followed by St Andrew's Secondary School at 39.21 seconds and Green View Secondary School at 44.46 seconds.

Some of the items students used to put their robots together included Tupperware containers, motors, paper cups and propellers.

Students had earlier been given a special mission - to manoeuvre their robots through a hole-plugging trial.

Anderson Secondary School won the award for successfully plugging its robot through the hole in the water tank in a record time of 30 seconds.

Apart from putting the students' creativity to the test, the special task is ideally geared towards preparation for natural disasters such as the recent Japan nuclear crisis, as robots can gain access to areas that humans cannot.

SEG DBME Students got Merit award at BES 5th Scientific Meeting (BES5SM) @ NTU

A team of DBME students participated in the Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore) (BES) 5^th Scientific Meeting (BES5SM) for the 1^st time @ NTU on the 28^th May 2011 (Sat) and clinched a Merit Award under the Poster Section Category. Joining 4 other participating teams from the School of Applied Science (SAS), our SAS teams also got a Merit and a Distinction award under the same category. One of the SAS team also clinched a Bronze in the technical section. Overall, it’s a happy day with all winners!

Our students’ participating project was titled : “ Wireless Low Cost Heart Rate Monitoring”. It is useful for doctors and nurses to monitor multiple patient’s heart rate in real-time as well as to plot a 2 x probes electrocardiogram (ECG) waveform if an abnormal heart rate is detected. Despite of the UT week that have just past, our students put in their best to impress the judges. Special thanks to Hisham who came to support us on this day.

Orientation Programme Day 3 - Tug-of-War/SEG Performance

It's Day 3 of Freshman Orientation, the freshmen gathered at Agora hall 2, our home base waiting to be move out to the Astroturf and witness the tug of war competition between schools and centre.

We cheered out loud for our SEG Student and Staff team when they were on the battle field. SEG Student and Staff teams managed to knock out their competitors from different schools and centres, and made all the way to finals, and all of us hoping we could win and conquer the war.

It was the finals fight between SEG Staff versus SIT Staff. The fight begins, everyone cheered out loud for our SEG staffs. Screaming out..!! “Pull..!! Pull..!!” SEG Staff wins..!! Everyone jumped up high and screamed happily.

Tug-of-War competition ended, everyone were tired and exhausted cheering for our tug-of-war teams. We headed back to our home bases, walking like champions and raising our flags up high. We had mini celebration in our home base congratulate the SEG Student and Staff team. Everyone was hungry, and lunch was served.

Everyone was delighted about the lunch as it was filling and nice. Next activity is our own time practicing our war cry and the performance. Good to see everyone is participative and have lots of progress.

After practicing it’s time for us to have a rest. We had a sharing session by one of our graduates. He shared his three years life journey in Republic Polytechnic and shared some tips and skills on how he breezed through and ways of exceling in studies. Hope the story he delivered could inspire every one of us.

After dinner, it was raining heavily outside, everyone was disappointed to hear the news and hoping the rain would stop and have jam and hop session. The dynamic duos (emcee) never fail to entertain and keep them motivated; we practice our war cry once again before school presentation performance begins. Everyone energy level was high and here come our judges.

Freshmen were screaming out loud welcoming the judges to our home base. We start off with the performance and it was a blast. During the performance we all war-cried together, and it was perfectly done. Judges were impressed and there were smiles on their faces.

After the judges have left our home base, we all cheered and did one last time Republic War Cry, everyone do it together as One RP.

Soon we received notification that the weather was clear and ready to move up to lawn for jam and hop session. Freshmen were excited to hear the good news and hoping that we could win the Principal’s Cup this year. Once we have moved and gathered at lawn, everyone waited patiently for the results.

All of us were eager to know the results, and now the time has come. Emcee announce the 2^nd and 1^st runner up winners and as the rest of us our heartbeats pounded like a drum hoping SEG could be the champions this year.

Next the emcee announces the champion for year 2011; The Champion is, School of… Engineering! Everyone screamed out loud, jumping around happily and broke into tears. All the hard work we have contributed and participate was worth it.

After jam and hop session, everyone smile happily walking back to our home base. We had photo shoot session for all SEG students, and everyone was given the opportunity to hold and have their own pose taking pictures with the Principal’s Cup. That’s the end our Freshmen Orientation Journey. Thank you SEG Freshmen!

Orientation Programme Day 2 - Spot Your Pod/SEG's Time

On the 2nd day of Orientation Programme, we started off with “Spot Your Pod”. The freshmen got the chance to see their class and interact with their classmates for the first time. The class is being conducted by our own student leaders as “Acting Facilitators”. They are being taught on how to use “LEO” for the first time and the rules and regulation of the new system in Republic Polytechnic. Ice-breaking games were also conducted to bond the freshmen together before the start of school the following week on Monday.

The next activity which is waiting in line for them would be the SLA Introduction. It is actually time for Cyriva Club and also other IGs in the SEG to promote themselves to the freshmen. Right after that, it was lunch break for all of us. As usual, people would tend to get excited when they heard that food is being served. The team leaders had lunch with the freshmen for a better bonding and at the same time, shared their experience in RP with them.

Following this, the freshmen were taught on the Team Republic Echo. It was a long session as the emcees ensured that they really got the tone and variation right before they proceed on. It was an exhausting yet fun activity for all of us.

Right after that, they were given some rest time but at the same time, they were having the Mass Activity together. This Mass Activity is named as Time capsule where they have to make a paper heart.

Inside the heart, the freshmen have to write down their aspirations and what they want to achieve after three years in Republic Polytechnic.

They were separated into their diplomas with a box to decorate and to put their heart-warming hearts. They were instructed to decorate the box nicely with their diploma names on it. By then, everyone including the committees together with the student leaders and helpers were exhausted.

There goes the second day of Orientation Programme for the year ones.

Orientation Programme Day 1 - Principal's Cup Challenge

On 13 April 2011, the 1st day of Orientation Programme, we had the Principal’s Cup Challenge of the 40 game stations which was contributed by the different schools in RP.

When the freshmen arrived at our homebase (Agora Hall 2) in the morning, they were lined up in teams with their student leaders.

At 10am, our Director of SEG Dr. Wang gave his speech to welcome all freshmen, as well as highlighted key achievements in SEG. Around 10:05am, our Director flag off to commence the Principal’s Cup Challenge.

All our teams left the Agora Hall 2 excitedly to the different game stations around RP and participated in the games. All of them hope to score high points for SEG.

After a long day, our students came back to home-base for refreshments. We began the cheer and performance practice at 430pm. As the emcees were teaching the students the lyrics, our student leaders showed them the movement.

The day ended with the freshmen all hyped up and eager to return for the 2nd day of Orientation Programme!

SEG Freshmen Orientation Day - Engineers' Day

Freshmen Orientation Day, known as the Engineers’ Day was held on 12th April 2011 specially for our new intake of freshmen. Organized by Cyriva Club, we welcomed a total of more than 200 freshmen!

They came down with excitement on their faces and eager to know their course mates and what is life in Republic Polytechnic all about. As they step into South Agora, we had our student helpers and leaders to guide and cheer them as they make their way into Agora Hall 2.

We started off with the ice breaking games! The freshmen had so much fun among themselves with our student leaders and they started to make friends with one another!

After the ice breaking games we sent the team out for the team building games. These games are related to our School of Engineering course modules.

By allowing them to play these games, they got an idea of what they will be learning in new school term. As they were playing the team building games, they also learnt the SEG cheer, and the whole stretch of walkway leading to South Agora from Agora Hall were filled with the voices of Engineers!

Looking at those freshmen enjoying their games and cheering together reminded us of ourselves when we were in Year 1!

After the team building games is lunch time! Delicious yummy food was delivered to them! These new freshman sat around in a circle and ate together, as they ate, they chatted with one another and got closer with their team mates and student leader.

After lunch was the practice of Tug-of-War! This was to prepare our freshmen for the Tug-of-War competition during Orientation Programme 2011! For those who are not tugging, they were led by a team of student leaders to practice the Cheers. The freshmen cheered at the top of their voice for the SEG Tug-of-War team!

After all the training and cheering, we went back to Agora Hall 2 for the freshmen to rest and refreshments were provided. As they rest, our guest speaker representing IET (The Institution of Engineering and Technology) came and they put on seriousness on their faces, wanting to know more about their future prospects. The speaker inspired them to be a great engineer and everyone gave a standing ovation for the speaker.

Following this, we had photo hunt as our last event of the day! We sent teams of freshmen out to search for places in the given photos given and they had to take a team picture in the places to complete the game!

Leaving a memory in their phone with their team mates, the freshmen ended their day and went home with a great experience on their 1^st day in Republic Polytechnic.

First SEG’s International Service Learning Project to Siem Reap

A team of 23 students (out of which 21 are SEG students from various diplomas and different years) together with 2 SEG staffs Eugene Tham and Sim Shyuan Jing have completed a great adventure and learning experience at Siem Reap, Cambodia from 22^nd March 2011 – 31^st March 2011.

For this trip, Republic Polytechnic & Renew Powers Technologies collaborated to produce wonderful Solar panels to the school in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The 10-day trip was an achievement to complete the solar panels.

The team visited Ballangk Community School to teach the kids with the solar panel kits to equip them with basic knowledge of the usage of solar panels. Not only teaching on how to use the panels but also teaching them Basic English.

During the 10 days sting in Siem Reap, they have completed a few projects:

1) Successfully installed solar panels lighting system for a RP sponsored health post in Ballangk Commune

2) A solar toy kit workshop with 50 primary school kids

3) 2 English workshops for about 200 primary school kids

SEG Graduates BBQ was held at Aloha Loyang in March 2011. This event was specially organised for the graduates to get together and spend quality time with each other. Furthermore, they have the chance to mingle around with one another from a mixture of courses in engineering and at the same time, allow the graduates to catch up with one another before they part ways into their next phase of life.

The event started off when Cyriva Club members started to place the food on the grill. Some of the graduates helped to start the fire. They were helpful and patient to start up the fire.

As the graduates started consuming the barbecued food which was being served to them, some of the Cyriva Club members went to chit chat with them and made the graduates feel welcomed. Some were playing party games while some were even telling jokes. Everyone was enthusiastic and participative during the game sessions which have been prepared specially for the graduates by Cyriva Club.

Some of the graduates who attended the event shared their life experience in Republic Polytechnic and how they managed to juggle their studies. They gave us a glimpse of how the three years in Republic Polytechnic had been for them and some shared about their courses. While some have already started working, the rest of the graduates shared with one another what they were going to work as in future.

The graduates were friendly and easy going. They even barbecued the food with us. At the end of the event, everyone enjoyed the night and we exchanged contacts with each other to keep in touch.

We hope this Graduates BBQ would be a memorable event to those who have attended and Graduates of SEG, do keep in touch with us! Cheers J

Novel Automobile Challenge - Award of Special Mention

DAA students clinched 2 Golds and 2 Silvers at the Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition 2011

4 teams of SEG-DAA students participated in the recently concluded Singapore Amazing Flying Machine Competition 2011 (held from 10 to 18 Mar).

Despite intense competition from a field of 36 teams (comprising teams from NUS, NTU, SIM, NIE and the 5 Polys), our students impressed the judges with their ingenious flying craft designs, sound application of aerodynamic principles and sublime flying skills. In the process, our students managed to stand out from the rest in the presentation and flying phases of the competition, and clinched the following 4 awards:

One of our students’ design was inspired by the Hunter Killer Drone in the movie Terminator 3 - which drew special commendation from the judges.

Polytechnic Student Research Program (PSRP) Awards Ceremony 2011

Republic Polytechnic School of Engineering had emerged as one of the Winning teams for the PSRP 2011.

SEG students won GOLD award in IES design competition

5 students from the Diploma of Biomedical Electronics (DBME), School of Engineering won the Institute of Engineers Singapore (IES) Design 2011 GOLD award based on their FYP project - “iPhone based Brain-Controlled power wheel chair”. This is the 1^st time ever for RP to win the Gold award in the prestigious yearly competition. As the gold winner, the team will receive $1000 prize and will be sponsored by IES to represent Singapore to attend the 5^th i-Create convention to be held in Bangkok in July 2011.

Let’s give our heartiest congratulations to the team members! They are ONG GIA PHU, FREDDY, TEN JING MAO, KENNETH LIM JUN HAO, LIANG WEIKANG.

SEG won 3rd Prize in NUS IEEE Robotic Challenge

After our stupendous victory at Singapore Robotic Games 2011, our students had participated in NUS IEEE Robotic Challenge which was concluded on 23^rd February, 2011. In spite of having understanding tests, our students from DDEE (JIN WEI, JEFFRI CHANDRA and HTUN LINN AUNG) made us proud by winning the third prize in NUS IEEE robotic competition. In fact, students had programmed their robots in just two days and able to make it work with the help of Dhananjaya Maha and Soh Lin Heng (SRG TDA’s).

Cyriva Club has recently conducted an online quiz to all SEG students to gauge their understanding of RP, SEG and their roles as RP student.

The questions covered areas like Student Code of Honour (R.E.P.U.B.L.I.C.), Code of Conduct and SEG. The quiz format consists of a mixture of MCQs, True/False and structured questions.

A total of 309 students participated and 1 Non-Diploma CE point has been awarded to 305 students who scored 50% for this quiz.

Visit to Jurong Districenter

On 23 Feb 2011, 16 students from SEG (mostly DIOM and DSCM) visited the Jurong Districenter at BDP Pte Ltd in Pioneer Sector, Tuas.

This visit is jointly organized jointly by Logistics and Supply Chain Management Society and RP.

Students were brought on a guided tour by the logistics and warehouse managers. They were briefed on the warehouse management system, including enterprise resource planning, inventory management, pick and pack process, facility design and safety/ ergonomics.

At each step of the tour, the managers interacted with the students by asking them questions on the logic and practicality of the warehouse system. Students were able to reflect and respond from their learning in the modules of Facilities Planning and Warehousing and Storage.

On 22^ndFeb 2011, 25 students from the School of Engineering (SEG) took part in the laboratory tour for RP-NEC RFID Lab and i-SAIL.

This event was organized by LSCMS (Logistics and Supply Chain Management Society) IG together with RP-NEC RFID and i-SAIL laboratories.

During the tour, the student participants were explained about the two labs’ capabilities, equipment and projects (both industrial and students’ final year project).

In addition, Student Leaders from LSCMS IG also shared with their peers and juniors about their learning experiences from the two labs.

Overall, this lab tour has proven to be an eye opening experience to many participants, especially Year 1 SEG students as well as other SEG students from the other diplomas (other than DIOM and DSCM).

SEG Students make it to top 6 finalist SAP Dashboard Design Challenge 2010-2011

A group of DSCM students from SEG (Team Name: Sans Souci) consisting of Leader Han Xu(3rd Year), Sylvia (2nd Year) and Wang Wen (2nd Year) made it to the top 6 finalist for SAP Dashboard Design Challenge 2010-2011. SAP is an official technology partner to the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula one team and has been such a partner for more than a decade.

In early November 2010, SAP invited all tertiary students in universities and polytechnics in Southeast Asia to participate in this first ever SAP dashboard design competition, which is to develop a dashboard to analyse the performance of all F1 teams.

We assembled this team of 3 DSCM students to participate and within a short period of 6 weeks, the team managed to submit a nicely designed dashboard by 6 Jan 2011.

Our team put in great effort within such a short time on top of their heavy academic loading and managed to enter the final 6 after competing against 50+ entries from Southeast Asia!

On 18 Feb 2011, we went to SAP Singapore office for the final presentation to vie for the Top 3.

Our team gave a great presentation to showcase the functionality and insightful user experience provided by the dashboard we designed.

It was definitely a fruitful learning journey for our students, being there has been a great achievement and learning opportunity for us!

SEG students have done us proud again by clinching 7 trophies in Singapore Robotics Games (SRG) 2011!

The Singapore Robotic Games 2011 was held from 25^th – 27^th January 2010 at the Singapore Science Centre. The objectives of the Singapore Robotic Games are:

to inculcate in the general public an understanding and appreciation of robotics and automation;
to educate the general public on the things robots can do that are quite apart from industrial tasks;
to help in the technology development by providing benchmarks for practical robotics research and development; and
to encourage innovation in design among young engineers and provide them with a forum to display their works

This year, RP had participated in the following 6 categories:

1) Remote Controlled Underwater Robot category

2) Autonomous Underwater Robot category

3) Remote controlled Robot Sumo category

4) Autonomous Robot Sumo category

5) Intelligent Robot Sumo category

6) Open Category

Day 1 (25^th January, 2011)

In autonomous underwater robotic category, there were 11 teams registered - 5 from RP, 2 from ITE, 2 from NP, 1 from NYP and 1 from NTU. However, all the competitors withdrew from the competition at the last minute due to technical problems. As a defending champion of this event, our robots performed exceedingly well and were able to complete the tasks to win all the top three awards (Champion, 1^st Runner-up and 2^nd Runner-Up). With this, we are maintaining our unbeatable record in autonomous underwater robot category!

In remote controlled underwater robotic category, there were 34 teams from all the tertiary institutes, ITE and NTU. Despite the fierce competition, our robots clinched the second and third prizes, losing the first position to NYP with a mere time difference of 6 seconds.

Day 3 (27^th January, 2011):

In Intelligent robot category, there were 13 teams from all the tertiary institutes and ITE. Our bronze award winning robot had secured 72 points out of 76 points. In addition, one of our robot’s unique design and picking mechanism have wowed the judges over and was awarded a special award in this category.

All these achievements were accomplished despite a major setback in the midst of preparing for the competition as our well trained and experienced robot controller had resigned just before the competition. It was an uphill task for the team to look for the substitute. Undaunted, we identified a second year DAA student (EZEKIAL) and trained him for the competition. We are most glad that he has made us proud by winning silver and bronze medals. This truly demonstrates SEG CAN (Confidence, Adaptability, Never give up spirit) spirit!

SEG Strike First GOLD Medal in WorldSkills

in WorldSkills Singapore 2011!!!

After 18 months of intensive training, 3^rd Year student Chan Jun Wei William from School of Engineering has done us proud, to be RP’s first Gold Medalist in the highly prestigious Worldskills competition. He emerged as the winner among 20 competitors from other polytechnics and ITE, after quarter-final in 2010 and the 3-day long final round last week. He was awarded the Gold Medal, Diploma of Excellence and $3000 by our Minister of Manpower, Mr Gan Kim Yong, in the category of Information Network Cabling.

William will be representing Singapore to compete in the WorldSkills International 2011 held in London in October. The WorldSkills International is a prestigious Olympics Skills competition where countries all over the world come together to compete in various industry skills.

Our 4 other students from SEG (Kenneth Tan Guan Quan and Terence Soh Rong Cheng, Adriel Chen Jiehao and Wee Ping) from SEG also managed to enter the final round of the competition. They have shown us that we can achieve all possibilities with our SEG fighting spirit.

LSCMS IG: Night Cycling to WLNA and Jurong Fishery Port

Despite December being well-known for rainy days, the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Society Interest Group (LSCMS IG) still went ahead and organized a Night Cycling on 10 December. About 20 students and 5 staff took part in the event, and were assisted by about 5 other personnel from external organizations, who helped to ensure the safety of all the cyclists.

This is the first time that a SEG Cyriva Club IG has organized a on the road overnight cycling event, covering industrial visits to 2 places. Students were gathered at the loading bay between E2 and E4, where a safety briefing was conducted and bikes, that were delivered from East Coast, were checked for their lights, brakes, gears, and that the cyclists were comfortable and confident with the height of the bikes. As dusk approached, dark clouds also gathered over the notoriously rain-prone region of Woodlands. But all our prayers were answered as the weather held, and after a water parade amidst a few rain drops, the whole contingent was flagged off at 7.45pm, to the horn of 2 safety vehicles accompanying the group.

Our first stop was at Warehouse Logistics Net Asia (WLNA), a logistics service provider that provides chilled and frozen food warehousing and transportation, and their major customer is the Dairy Farm group. We cycled down Woodlands Rd, Bukit Batok Rd, Jurong Town Hall Rd, Boon Lay Way and finally arrived at Quality Rd at about 9.20pm. The highlight of this stop was the live Christmas trees that were brought in by Cold Storage. For many of us, it was the first time that we had seen real Christmas trees, each of which cost about $200 to $300 and can survive for a few months at water temperature of around 5^oC. It was also a nice way for us to cool down as we entered the cold room, after having cycled for about 19km.

After WLNA, it was time for SUPPER! Tired limbs were recharged, and growling stomachs were fed, before we cycled down the Ulu Pandan Park Connector, passing by Japanese and Chinese Garden along the way. The students stopped by one of the ponds, and played team bonding games led by the IG main committee members. It was a good way for the IG members to interact and have fun, especially when there was a good mix of Year 2 and Year 3 male and female students, from both DSCM and DIOM.

At about 1am, there were occasional flashes of lightning, and a slight drizzle started. But it was not enough to dampen the spirits of us cyclists, as we neared our second destination, which was at Jurong Fishery Port. The smell of raw fish signalled that we were reaching the port, and we were greeted by another member of the Society who was our tour guide for the night. Seafood were brought in by vessels from other countries such as China and Indonesia, and brought to the hall where the sellers would determine its prices depending on its freshness. Unlike the usual wet markets, all the fishes were being laid out on the floor, and sold by the crates. Most of the customers there were from the wet markets, restaurants, and supermarket chains such as Sheng Siong. While moving around in the hall, the group had to be cautious of its slippery surface and any protruding fish tail, crab claws or squid tentacles into the narrow paths between the different stalls. However, the most important thing to look out for are the impatient stallholders rushing to pull in crates or pushing trolleys of seafood along the narrow walkway. That was especially annoying, especially to have someone shouting at you to get out of his way while admiring the size and variety of seafood at the stalls.

After the visit at around 4am, a bus had been chartered to ferry the students back to RP while the bikes were sent back by another lorry. It was truly a memorable experience for the students, as they bonded and battled the slopes together, with the stronger cyclists urging the weaker ones on, and also gained exposure to other aspects of their studies in terms of the cold and fish supply chain in Singapore. It was also another successful event organized by the IG and marks the end of a fruitful year for the members.

Camp Ingénieur 2010 - SEG Student Leadership Camp

On 27^th – 29^th December 2010, Cyriva Club organized a 3D2N student leadership camp to students from the School Of Engineering, targeting at the Year Ones. This camp aims to instill leadership skills in the participants through leadership activities, and at the same time, develop the leadership qualities and enhance the character development of them.

Getting to know one another

On the first day of the camp, everybody reported for the camp with an anxious mind as they do not know which group and who they are going to be with for the rest of their three days. As excited as the participants, Cyriva Club committee members were excited to meet the new participants whom they would be known as our future student leaders or helpers.

The Longest Line

The day started with some ice-breaking games such as “Catch Me If You Can” and “The Longest Line” where the student leaders made their first bonding session with their own team members. “Catch Me If You Can” made them run around catching one another in Agora Hall. Everyone was feeling rather nervous since they had the chance to be either the catcher or the runner. We ended the game with a forfeit for those who were still standing up as the last catcher and runner.

The next game, “The Longest Line”, requires the team to create the longest line with all their belongings on them. Some of the team had actually brought out their cards, tickets, shoelaces, jackets and many more. They even made out a loop out of the long line for a longer one. In the end, only one team won and they earned points for winning. The last ice-breaking game, “Captains On Board”, participants had to follow the command of the Captain and make out a “lighthouse” and etc.

After all the ice-breaking games, each team had to make a team identity flag with their new team’s name. While they were doing up their flag, they were provided with refreshments as well. Right after that, the participants had their team building games. The participants played games like “Blind Spider Tower”, “Cup Hunter”, “Challenger and Defender” and lastly “Balloon Blast”. They got “Wet” and “Wild” in the games. Each team was made to defeat another team in the challenge as well. It was indeed a fierce challenge for some of the games.

After a long and tiring day out in the sun, the participants had their dinner, and at the same time they did their preparation for “Ingénieur Night“ as a team. After filling up their stomachs, we had them to play a game of “Conquer the Flag”. They were made to run around the school to find their flag and sweat it out once again. Some were fast and attentive enough to get their flag as fast as possible while some had a difficult time trying to find theirs’.

On the second day of the camp, all the teams had already strong bonds among themselves. To bring their bonds higher to the next stage, we started the day with 2 ALC activities followed by ALC Maze. The ALC maze is formed by 6 containers of surprises and adventure, and it is an excellent platform for teambuilding and character development sort of activities. Those who went through the ALC Maze had fun and enjoyment. Moreover, the ALC Maze brings out the leadership qualities of an individual student. This is due to the total darkness environment in the ALC Maze and teams could only complete the task as a team.

The last activity for the day was multi-storey captain’s ball. Since it’s a sporty event, the participants were excited. Multi-storey captain’s ball is different from ordinary captain’s ball as this activity is played with balls of different sizes (e.g. Basketball, volleyball, tennis ball and ping pong ball) all at the same time. The points allocation were given by the size of the balls as the team catch, the smaller the ball the more points they were given.

We ended our second day of the camp with group performance done by our participants. Teams mostly did dance, sang a song and performed a skit to entertain the audience. Our participants were able to show their talent, creativity and unity, on their team performance.

The third day was the prize-giving session to the winning teams for Camp Ingénieur 2010. To remind us the wonderful times we had in the camp, we had photo taking as a memory.

SEG BRAG about Frisbee, Basketball and Floorball!

SEG is proud to announce that we have emerged as CHAMPION in Frisbee, 2^nd place in Basketball and 3^rd place in Floorball during BRAG (Battle Republic Annual Games) held end of last year 2010.

BRAG is a series of team sports games where the different schools and centres competed with each other.

iCar CE Workshop and Competition

The RP-Xilinx Programmable Logic Solutions Joint Laboratory and Electronics Hobby Interest Group (EHIG) have successfully conducted iCar CE workshops and competition.

The students from EHIG were trained to construct and program the FPGA-based microcontroller for vehicle navigation. These students in-turn, were amazingly good student facilitators for their peers who had signed up for the iCar competition.

We are very proud of the student facilitators from EHIG group. They are worthy representation of students, emerging with positive characteristics fostered by RP-PBL pedagogy. They were able to deal very well with ad-hoc situations, to manage the big group of student participants and to help them with their technical problems. These were achieved with minimal intervention from staff facilitators. Thumbs up for them! J

It is most heartening to witness that the students had enjoyed the learning process, which was evident from the smiles on their faces, and laughter heard throughout the event. The top winner team was awarded the Spartan 3A Development Kit and souvenirs, proudly sponsored by Avnet Asia Pte Ltd.

LSCMS IG Visit to Port of Tanjung Palapas (PTP) and Senai Airport (7th Oct 2010)

On 7^th October 2010, 13 students and 4 DSCM staff from Republic Polytechnic went for a one-day trip to the Port of Tanjung Palapas (PTP) and Senai Airport, both in Johor. This was a collaborative initiative between Republic Polytechnic-Diploma in Supply Chain Management (DSCM) and Logistics & Supply Chain Management Society Interest Group (LSCMS IG) with The Chartered of of Institute of Logistics and Transport, Singapore (CILT). Besides representatives from Republic Polytechnic, the trip also comprised of CILT members who are mainly industry practitioners.

During the trip, we were given an introduction about PTP and the developments for Senai Airport. This was then followed by a port tour at the facilities by both the port representatives.

Besides getting to know about the port operations (e.g. how it work, key challenges) as well as their future plans, this trip also provided a chance for our students and staff to mingle with CILT members from companies such as Changi Airport Group, Chevron, NTU, DHL and Future Electronics.

The trip would not have been possible without sponsorship for the IG students from Supply Chain Asia, a community that seeks to promote the supply chain industry, which paid for the costs of all the students. This is definitely one of the perks of joining LSCMS IG!

The feedbacks from our students have been most positive after the trip. Overall, it has been a most fruitful and enriching trip to our students as well as our staff.
