RP students won 1st Runner up in Amazing Science X Challenge 2012

The team of RP students, MYINT MO OO (SEG), MOE KHANT THAW (SAS) and HAN MYO HTWE (SOI) from Team Rampage, have won the 1st RUNNER UP prize (1 trophy, 3 silver medals and S$2000 cash) in the Amazing Science X Challenge organized by Science Centre Singapore, DSO and NUS. Their exhibit Batteryless Alternative Energy Storage  is supported by NEXTspace lab.

The Amazing Science-X Challenge is one of the nation’s most talked about scientific showcase. 2012 marked the fourth year of the competition with more than 100 teams competing to build THE Xhibit with THE Xfactor! The student participants are to build an exhibit (similar to those you see in Science Centre) to showcase a science phenomenon. Our students are in category D where they are to pit against other Polytechnic and University students. The top prize goes to NUS, 3rd prize is SMU. As you can see, Republic Polytechnic shined brightly yesterday even among the universities.

And this is a very interesting competition as teachers and supervisors are NOT allowed in the competition hall during set up, preparation and judgment.  Simply put it, even on their own, our students CAN!

This competition started in May 2012 and the students worked on and off for 2+ months before the final judging week, 21 to 25 Aug 2012. They are even willing to work hard and enjoy the fun during the last 2 weeks before their UT3. The students started off with some energy ideas, however along the way, after the advises from the scientists from Science Centre and me, they narrowed down their ideas to the Batteryless Alternative Energy Storage. They started building their project by savaging the parts from NEXTspace lab and past projects. They even managed to get a condominium model from a construction site.
