Over the weekend on 3 March 2012,
a team of 25 SEG students together with Chee Fui and Eugene Tham,
conducted a simple solar toy engineering workshop with primary school kids from
Beyond Social Service.
The team arrived at a child care
centre loaned to BSS for the workshop at Lengkok Bahru slightly before 1000hrs
in the morning and the kids were already eagerly waiting for the workshop to
start. Our SEG students were able to engage the kids in both the engineering
workshop and sports activities. According to the volunteer coordinator, the
kids at BSS, were mainly from troubled family backgrounds and have poor
academic records.
This workshop is part of the
team’s (ISLP Solar Power) YEP pre-trip component. From this year, OSG have
tried to align our ISLP projects to tap on YEP funding. As part of YEP’s
requirements, all overseas project need to have a pre and post trip local
component aligned to the objectives of the main project. The team, together
with Shyuan Jing’s team (ISLP Sun and Joy), would be serving our international
component on 13-27 March in Cambodia.
Below are some photos taken during
the workshop:
“Let’s start by reading the manuals for instructions”
“We are going to make a Transformer!”
Our student volunteer and the kid both engaged in trying to
figure out how to build the robot.
Kid: “Can you build this for me?”
Due to not enough tables and chairs due to overwhelming
numbers in participants, volunteers and kids ended up working on the floor.
Our SEG student engaging young kids in solar toy modelling.
Our student volunteer went beyond
the duties for the workshop and taught the kid Math on the spot.
We
hope that the primary school kids from Beyond
Social Service enjoyed themselves and at the same time gained some knowledge
from this workshop.
