DBME SOT to Thailand

On 6 to 12 March 2012, 26 students, mainly from DBME embarked on a trip to Thailand for 7 days led by staff Desmond Lay and Eugene Tham, covering places like Pattaya and Bangkok. Students get to experienced how various industries in Thailand survived the flood in 2011 and witness the advanced medical and healthcare setups in Bangkok too.

The main objectives in this SOT are to allow students from SEG to experience and witness industries not available in Singapore, in particularly the automobile industry and also the various medical instrument setups in the hospitals.

A list of companies the visited includes:

·         SAHA Group Industrial park Sriacha in Pattaya which host companies like Samsung Electronics Thailand, Nissin food products etc. Students were given a tour around the facilities which include the water processing plant which made this industry park self-sufficient even during crisis like the flooding in 2011.
·         Amanta Nakorn Industrial Estate focuses mainly on the industrial automation setup. This visit is useful for students from DIOM as a lot of setups are relevant to their course of studies and is an eye-opener to students from other diplomas.
·         SAHA Auto part Industry visit includes the plant where various automobile parts are manufactured. The host gave us a tour of the plant and explained the collaboration between Toyota and SAHA Auto parts, giving students knowledge in the automobile industries, which is not available in Singapore
·         The main focus of this trip will be the visit to Vibhavadi Hospital and Bumrungrad International Hospital. Both are privately managed hospitals and is equipped with many advances equipments which are very related to DBME students. Students were given a tour of the Radiography and imaging department, where operations and maintenance of the equipment were demonstrated. They were also given a talk by the Facilities Management department (managed by Innovation Technology Co Ltd) on how and what the hospital has done to achieve Thailand’s Energy saving Award, something which can be useful for students from DREE.

In the process, we managed to engage with some industries which is willing to participate in future projects collaboration and students attachment program. This SOT not only provides SEG students with knowledge not available from textbooks but also opportunities for SEG to branch overseas for more academic related activities.
