SEG DBME Study Trip to Thailand

50 students, mainly from DBME embarked on a trip to Thailand, covering places like Bangkok as well as some other provinces of Thailand like Ayutthaya, Petchburi and Hua Hin. Students got to experience how various industries in Thailand survived the floods and witness the advanced medical and healthcare setups in various provinces of Thailand.

The main objectives in this SOT were to allow students from SEG to get exposure to the industries not available in Singapore, particularly the automobile industry, the various medical instrument setups in the hospitals and the biomedical related courses in universities.

Some of the trip highlights were:
•    Visit to Rajthanee Hospital. It is a private hospital in the province of Ayutthaya, which was founded by a team of doctors who graduated from Siriraj Hospital. Hospital aims to provide health services to the people of Ayutthaya and nearby provinces so that they do not need to waste their time and money travelling to Bangkok for getting treatment. The hospital is equipped with the state of art PACS system X ray centre, 16 slices CT, medical laboratory with Information laboratory system. Students were hosted by the top management of the hospital including director  and department heads. Students got an opportunity to visit all their accredited lab facilities as well as their imaging department.
•    Visit to RangSit University. It is a comprehensive private institute offering a multitude of programs in diverse fields of study.
•    Visit to Honda car plant. Honda is one of the major car manufacturers in Thailand and has recently recovered from the flood in 2011. Its current plant in Ayutthaya has an output capacity of 240,000 units and is looking to expanding its operation in Thailand in manufacturing of commercial vehicles.
•    "Visit to Technopolis Science Museum.
The National Science Museum (Technopolis Science Museum) is housed in a world-class building that is an engineering marvel in itself: a pair of giant cubes balanced on their points, made of fiberglass, steel and glass. It was built in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of HM Queen Sirikit. The museum is a great place to learn about science in Thailand.

Apart from the educational visits, there was a cultural aspect in the tour. As part of the cultural activities, students had an opportunity to visit the world’s largest weekend outdoor market in Bangkok: Chatuchak market. They got the opportunity to visit 200+ years old temple in Petchburi province as well as mingle with local Thai people and understand some aspects of the Thai culture at the Thailand village of Siam Niramit.
